Side Scan Sonar Surveys

Piri Reis uses The Imagenex Model 872 "YellowFin" full-featured dual channel, high-resolution, side-scan

Sonar system.

The system consists of a towed underwater fish which sends out short high frequency, high intensity sound pulses which are illuminates the bottom from either side of the fish in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel. The narrow acoustic beam is sufficiently broad in the vertical plane to produce echoes from the seabed to points 150 metres or more a beam of the transducer.

For most survey work a medium frequency 390kHz can be used with the system set to either 25 or 50 metres per channel, providing a swath width of 50 or 100 metres centred on each survey line.

The YellowFin Sonar System Provides several aids for post processing sonar data. When recording a file, one may choose to record the data in a “.xtf” or “.872” format. Once the “.xtf” file is generated, post processing, online and offline mosaicking can be done on this file using SonarWiz.MAP common post processing programs by Chesapeake Technology, Inc.
